  • This driver is not intended for use on AMD products running in Apple Boot Camp platforms. Users of these platforms should contact their manufacturer for driver support.
  • When installing the AMD Catalyst™ Driver for Windows® operating system, the user must be logged on as Administrator, or have Administrator rights to complete the installation of the AMD Catalyst Driver.
  • The AMD Catalyst Omega Software Suite requires Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to be installed.

Depending on the game and system configuration, users may notice texture corruption and reduced frame rates when running games in multi-monitor Eyefinity modes.
  • Windows Driver Model (WDM) drivers are no longer bundled in the AMD Catalyst software suite. The WDM drivers install bundle can be downloaded independently through the AMD website.

AMD Launches Catalyst Omega Driver

AMD is today launching a major update to its Catalyst driver suite, know as Catalyst Omega. With no new hardware this side Christmas, AMD is using the opportunity to introduce a slew of features, performance improvements and bug fixes to its software package, with Catalyst Omega set to bring benefits to both developers and end users. AMD refers to Catalyst Omega as a Special Edition driver, but it represents a new baseline for the suite – all updates will be carried forward in future releases. Please note that this is purely a discussion piece covering the main updates at this stage, as we have yet to do testing of our own with Catalyst Omega.

The headline news is that Catalyst Omega can bring about performance increases of up to 19 percent with discrete GPUs and up to 29 percent with APUs, depending of course on the hardware and software in question. However, there's much more to it than that.

Catalyst Omega brings with it some enhancements and additions to AMD's feature set for improving visual quality during video playback. The first concerns AMD Fluid Motion Video, which is now available on all 7x00 A-Series APUs (35W+) and Radeon graphics cards. FMV harnesses GPU power with compute algorithms that can be used by PowerDVD 14 to smooth out footage when converting 24Hz Blu-ray source files into 60Hz playback. It does this by computing and interpolating inferred frames rather than simply repeating existing ones, supposedly removing judder without sacrificing detail.

Contour Removal is an algorithm that affects compressed video formats by attempting to remove video artifacts, again without losing detail. According to AMD, it shouldn't be limited by file type. This is enabled by a check box in the Catalyst Control Centre (CCC).

There are also some additions with regards to upscaling content. For example, 1080p Detail Enhancement, which unsurprisingly attempts to introduce higher detail levels to low resolution content when playing at 1080p, is now available on AMD APUs (7x00 A-Series). Like Contour Removal, the various aspects of this feature (e.g. edge-enhancement, de-noise, de-blocking etc.) are enabled with check boxes in the CCC. There's also the FullHD to UltraHD feature, which does exactly what it says. It combines FMB, Detail Enhancement and adaptive upscaling to make 1080p content look better when played on a 4K display – it is enabled by default as part of the driver.

Another big announcement is something enthusiasts have been waiting patiently for, which is support for AMD'sFreeSync technology on AMD FirePro, 7x00 A-Series APUs and of course Radeon R-Series desktop graphics. FreeSync uses DisplayPort's industry standard adaptive sync technology to synchronise your monitor's refresh rate to the frame rate of your content as it changes to eliminate stutter and tearing. This is similar to Nvidia's G-Synctechnology, without the need for an additional scaler. 

Samsung has already announced five 4K panels that will support FreeSync – like G-Sync, you'll still need a new monitor, as it needs to supports the new DisplayPort standard, but AMD estimates that FreeSync monitors will cost around $100 less than equivalent G-Sync screens. The Samsung panels announced are the UE590 (23.6-inch and 28-inch) and the UE850 (23.6-inch, 27-inch and 31.5-inch). These should be shipping in Q1 2015, with other monitors expected to be announced soon as well.

Another notable screen on the market is the Dell UP2715k, mainly because of its 5K resolution (5,120 x 2,880 to be precise). Catalyst Omega enables native support for 5K displays at 60Hz using two DisplayPort 1.2 connectors on FirePro and Radeon R-Series cards – simply connect the DisplayPorts and boot into Windows 8.1, and the screen should be auto-configured. FirePro users can also now utilise 24-screen (!) Eyefinity set-ups in Windows for the first time (previously it could be done in Linux), with six screen per GPU in a 4-way system.

AMD is also promising lot of quality assurance for Catalyst Omega. During development, it implemented a large scale driver solution across its workforce to help identify and fix as many issues as possible. It also tested the driver on more test systems and a wider range of system configurations than ever before. Finally, AMD utilised community feedback to develop a top 10 list of things that needed fixing from previous drivers and addressed them all. You can see the full list in the image above.

 

 

AMD Catalyst Omega Performance and Developer Improvements

As mentioned at the start, gaming performance gains with Catalyst Omega for discrete graphics cards can be as much as 19 percent compared to 13.12, though as the chart shows gains in affected games are likely to be closer to 10 percent or less, and it of course depends on your exact configuration and in-game settings. The same as true for APUs, where AMD says up to 29 percent is possible (compared to 14.2). Finally, through efficiency gains, AMD tells us that performance on AMD platforms (i.e. an AMD APU paired with an AMD GPU) can increase by as much as 15 percent.

Catalyst Omega takes steps to further improve frame pacing in Dual Graphics environments. Dual Graphics refers to situations where the GPU component of an APU is paired using CrossFire with a low-end discrete GPU. The examples AMD give are based on an A10-7850K paired with an R7 250, for example, which is clearly a low-end set-up. Nevertheless, it claims to offer up to around 5 percent more performance and, more importantly, a lower standard deviation between frame times (the closer to zero this is the better), in some cases up to 75 percent better.

For users who have “too much” performance i.e. their graphics hardware is outputting more frames than is useful even with all the settings at full, AMD is introducing Virtual Super Resolution, which is, practically speaking, the same as Nvidia's Dynamic Super Resolution in that it brings super-sampled anti-aliasing to games that don't natively support it. VSR allows you to render a game at a higher resolution than your native screen resolution, before downscaling it and bringing the higher detail levels with it. In some games it can even give you a competitive advantage by increasing the amount of a map you can see in an RTS, for example.

VSR is a game and engine agnostic feature, but it can currently only be used on the R9 290 series and the R9 285, though other graphics cards will follow in Q1 2015. It works on 1080p, 1,920 x 1,200 and 1440p displays at various levels of scaling up to 4K, though 4K rendering appears to only be supported on the R9 285 for now for some reason. It is enabled with a check box in the CCC, after which a list of higher-than-native resolutions should become available for selection in your games. AMD has not spoke of any blurring or filtering being applied to the final image – with DSR, Nvidia applies a Gaussian Blur filter to smooth the final output slightly.

AMD was also keen to discuss its developer relations, especially with regards to its API, Mantle. It boasts of support in four game engines (Frostbite 3, Nitrous, CryEngine and Asura), 10 publicly announced developers, 20+ launched or in-development Mantle titles and almost 100 registered developers in the Mantle Beta program. Furthermore, with Catalyst Omega, AMD's Gaming Evolved client (powered by Raptr) will now allow for the capturing, streaming and editing of in-game footage when running games with Mantle, as well as the ability to capture FPS data (much like FRAPS does for DirectX games). This applies to all GCN-based APUs and Radeon graphics cards.

Catalyst Omega also continues AMD's support for the OpenCL 2.0 programming standard by offering the most complete support currently available for it in the APP SDK 3.0, which is included as part of the download. OpenCL is open source, cross-vendor and non-proprietary, and it's specifically geared towards heterogeneous systems. It therefore allows developers to extract the benefits of AMD's use of Heterogeneous System Architecture in its latest APUs. AMD has also announced full support of the HSA 1.0 specification (currently in a provisional state) with its Carrizo APUs due next year.

AMD is also offering developers development tools that are downloaded separately from but still tie into improvements made in the main Catalyst Omega driver. These most notably include its HSA Runtime, AMD CodeXL 1.6 and GPU PerfStudio 3.1. CodeXL is a tools suite designed to help developers utilise the GPU as best and efficiently as possible. Introduced in 1.6 is a power profiler, which can display information about power consumption, frequency, temperature and voltage/current information to help analyse application performance. There's also GPU profiler support for OpenCL 2.0. Finally, GPU PerfStudio 3.1 is a performance analysis and debugging tool for gaming and graphics applications; it now comes with Mantle and OpenGL 4.4 support amongst other performance and stability improvements.

While driver updates are never as exciting as a fresh batch of hardware to play with (at least for us), it's clear that Catalyst Omega is a bigger step than usual for AMD. While it isn't likely to revolutionise your experience as an end user, free performance and improved video output quality are always welcome. It's also good that AMD isn't ignoring Nvidia's own progress, with the launch of the admittedly more limited VSR going some way to combat the green team's DSR. We're also excited to see what FreeSync can do, and curious as to how AMD's commitment to OpenCL 2.0, HSA and Mantle will play out in the future. Virtual Super Resolution (VSR)

The most prominent feature for desktop gamers with a dedicated graphics card will be VSR rendering. You guys also know this as super sampling and as DSR from Nvidia. Basically you render in a higher resolution and display on say Full HD 1920x1080 pixels. Typically this will increase scene quality for stuff that is in the background, like the more finer detail on grass and leaves on threes and such. You could say you could take the 4K experience towards a 1080P monitor. So with the introduction of Catalyst 14.12 you will now get the option to render the game at a higher resolution and show it in a lower one, bringing more quality to that lower resolution. In general VSR/DSR works like downsampling, but it has simple user on/off control. Textures will now be sampled at higher resolutions that equates to more pixels being sampled. Then a filter is applied. This high quality filter reduces or eliminates AA artifacts experienced with normal down-sampling, which relies (probably) on a simpler box filter. Virtual Super Resolutions beyond the native resolution of the display device will be available in a wide variety of games and applications, including the Windows desktop. Effectively, VSR provides a Super Sampling Anti-Aliasing (SSAA) feature for the games and applications that do not natively support that functionality. While the real benefit of VSR occurs while playing your games and applications, comparing ‘before and after’ screenshots is one way to understand and illustrate the benefits. Zooming in on specific areas of the images can bring those benefits into focus.

Dell’s 5K UP2715K monitor, which the company announced a couple weeks ago, might have a very high resolution, but what’s the point if your graphics card can’t actually drive it properly? Well, now AMD has added support for the 5120 by 2880 resolution at 60 Hz. Do note that you will still need two DisplayPort 1.2 interfaces, because a single DisplayPort 1.2 connection simply doesn’t have enough bandwidth to drive this display.

Hey, do you like multi-monitor setups? If so, you’ll be happy to know that you can now use 24 monitors on a single system with four FirePro graphics cards, connecting six monitors to each graphics card. Using the EyeFinity utility, you can then conveniently figure out which monitor is which and set all the needed overlap and blending settings.

For the R9 285, AMD has also added support for rotated EyeFinity, meaning you can mix portrait and landscape-oriented displays in EyeFinity configurations.

  • Virtual Super Resolution. This feature is AMD's answer to Dynamic Super Resolution, which Nvidia introduced with the GeForce GTX 970 and 980 earlier this fall. Like DSR, VSR renders games above the display's native resolution and then downscales them to fit. The effect is something akin to full-scene antialiasing, and at least in the case of DSR, it can pay real dividends in terms of image quality. The downside is, obviously, a high performance cost.
    VSR currently works only on Radeon R9 285 and R9 290 series graphics cards, and it supports the modes outlined in the matrix below. The feature can be enabled by ticking a checkbox in the Catalyst Control Center (under the My Digital Flat Panels section). Users can then select higher resolutions via in-game menus. Unlike with DSR, there's no way to dictate which scaling modes are exposed to games, and there's no slider to change the smoothness of the downscaling filter.
    AMD is cooking up a "phase 2" driver that will add VSR capabilities (with 4K downscaling) to additional cards, including everything from the Radeon R7 260 up. That driver is expected in the January-February time frame.

დაწერეთ ორიოდე სიტყვა, იქნებ საერთოდ არ ვარგა და გადმოწერაზე და დაყენებაზე რატო იწვალოს ხალხმა :D

მართლა ისეთ წარმადობა აქვს ამ ლეპტოპს რომ ისევ იმ 4k ეკრანის გამო ვფიქრობ დიდი კომპის შენახვას თორემ სრულიად მყოფნის ესეც

დავაყენე და მუშაობს ნორმალურად, ჯერჯერობით არაფერი პრობლემა შექმნია

რეზოლუცია 3200X1800-ზე დგება მარა მონიტორი რაზეცაა გათვლილი იმაზე მუშაობა ბევრად უკეთესად გამოსდის :)

გამოდის თუ არა სრაზუ ვაყენებ ახალ დრაივერს ^_^ დაჟე ვამოწმებ ხოლმე ყოველ მეორე უსაქმურ დღეს გამოუშვეს თუ არა რო არ გამომეპაროს :დ....  მშვენივრად უბერავს

დაჟე ვამოწმებ ხოლმე ყოველ მეორე უსაქმურ დღეს გამოუშვეს თუ არა რო არ გამომეპაროს :დ....  მშვენივრად უბერავს

სხვათაშორის მეც მაქვს ეგ ჩვევა, დღეში შეიძლება რამდენჯერმეც კი შევამოწმო ვინდოუსის განახლებები :givi:  (თითქოს რამეში გამიცდება დროზე თუ არ დავაყენე და :D)

 

დრაივერს რაც შეეხება რამდენიმე საათია რაც მიყენია და მუშაობს უპრობლემოდ, ჩემს კომპს არსებულ 4 თამაშში მშვენივრად უბერავს და სხვებზე რა მოგახსენოთ :D

ჰო ვინდოუსზეც და დაჟე ტელეფონის განახლებასაც კი ვამოწმებ ხოლმე :დ მეც ჩვევაში მაქ ....

 

მე რეზოლუციის ცვლილებამ დამაინტერესა მარა ჩემ კარტაზე ჯერ ვერ გაქაჩეს და მგონი არც გააკეთებენ :(((  280 X

27 იანზე ხომ მაქვს 4k მონიტორი და გეტყვი რომ მიჩვევის ამბავია რა, პატარა ტესტი და იკონები გამოსწორებადია screen resolution, make text and othe items larger or smaller და მაქ უკვე მიხვდები რა როგორ რა. ჩემს მონიტორზე როგორც მახსოვს 125% ზე მეყენა თუ 120%

ნამდვილად ეგრეა. ახლა კიდევ ლეპტოპებში დაიწყეს 15 იან ეკრანებზე 4k ეკრანების დაყენება და ხომ წარმოგიდგენია რა საზიზღრობაა

ხომ მაგრამ 4-5 ინჩიან სმარტებს რათ უნდა full hd ? პიქსელები ჩანს თუ რა ? გააკეთონ ნაკლები გაფართოება, თამაშებს უფრო საკაიფოდ გაქაჩავს და აღარ მოგიწევს მუდმივარ ახალ-ახალ პროცესორზე გადასვლა. მაგალითად რატომ ჯობს თამაშებში ios სხვა სისტემებს ? იმიტომ რომ გაფართოება აქვს ნაკლები და შესაბამისად მონსტრი სიმძლავრე არ უნდა. ეგ კი არა და ახლა 2k ჩადგეს ტელეში და მალე 4k საც ჩასვავენ მაგრამ ერთი კითხვა მიჩნდება, აზრი ?

მე დავაყენე გუშინ დრაივერი მარა ცოტა ვერ მივხვდი რაზეა საუბარი 1080 მონიტორი მაქვს და 4კ როგორ მივიღებ იქნებ დამაკვალიანოთ რა ხდება :)
