Asus GTX660 VS Gigabite 7870

In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7870 Gigabyte OC Edition are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 660.

The HD 7870 has a 120 MHz higher core clock speed but fewer Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce GTX 660. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the HD 7870 manages to provide 9.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7870 has a 120 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce GTX 660. This results in the HD 7870 providing 11.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce GTX 660 was released less than a year after the HD 7870, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 7870 Gigabyte OC Edition and theGeForce GTX 660 have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 7870 has 9.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce GTX 660, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7870 is marginally better than the GeForce GTX 660.

The Radeon HD 7870 Gigabyte OC Edition has 1280 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 660has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 7870 is 832. The GeForce GTX 660 having 128 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the HD 7870 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon HD 7870 Gigabyte OC Edition requires 175 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 660 requires 140 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 7870 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GeForce GTX 660. The HD 7870requires 35 Watts more than the GeForce GTX 660 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 7870 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce GTX 660.
