Keeping a TMDS on-die is a very difficult thing to do, especially if you have logic operating at such high clock speeds within the GPU, so with G80 NVIDIA had to move the TMDS off-die and onto this separate chip. The NVIO chip also supports HDCP, but you do need the crypto ROM keys in order to have full HDCP support on the card. While it may seem strange that NVidia has decided to move what would otherwise be internal circuitry to an external chip there is no doubt good reason for this.....somewhere. A few obvious possibilities come to mind just pondering why one would do such a thing: 1) It reduces the size of an otherwise already greatly oversized GPU die. This could not only reduce manufacturing costs but could also provide a slight edge with wafer control. 2) It isolates sensitive, discrete monitor timing signals for the high-speed 'noise' produced in the core, from a GPU that now for the first time has achieved internal frequencies greater than 1GHz. 3) It creates a GPU that is now a true modular, drop-in solution for other products that don't have a need for RAMDACs and other display output control. Ahhhh....I think we may be onto something there with #3. The AMD/ATI borg machine has just released a press statement regarding the near term availability of what they are calling the Stream processor. We WILL see NVidia strike back...and VERY soon. The result will be a CUDA board of unimaginable power, application, and cost....mostly cost. At least for now. G80, in my mind, is the WORLD'S FIRST complete, high-speed parallel processor.
